When we first heard about the Ride the Lobster event, we knew we had to be involved in some way. We received an overwhelming amount of inquiries from both individual riders and teams. It was clear early on that the new lighweight aluminum Coker Big One® was going to be a popular mount for this first-ever distance event. We decided that our best promotional option would be to oufit one of the many teams headed to Nova Scotia this June with new Coker unicycles.
After reviewing a number of the team’s requests, we chose Team American Mojo #77 from the Vermont & Rhode Island areas to ride the new Coker Big One® in the race. Team members include riders Eric Scheer of Peace Dale, Rhode Island, Bill Merrylees of Monpelier, Vermont, Mark Premo of Winooski, Vermont and team manager Dawn DiCecco of Shelburne, Vermont. American Mojo had the perfect mix of maturity, Coker riding experience, cycle racing background and public relations ability that we were looking for.
We couldn’t resist doing a special red, white and blue paint scheme on the team’s unis which can be seen in the photo above. Incidentally, the team is pictured there at the 5 Boro Ride Bike Tour in New York City back on May 4th taking the occasion to use it as a training ride for the Lobster. The team rolled out the new custom Cokers at the event and became instant celebrities as they rode head and shoulders above all their two-wheeled counterparts. They weren’t the only one-wheelers there though, as seen below with a few other Coker riders. A couple of these guys rode first generation Big Ones and it’s nice to see they are still on the road and going strong.
Commenting on the 5 Boro Ride, Eric said, “ The New York City ride went very well. It was great to ride down the middle of Manhattan and the four other boroughs without any cars! We got a constant flow of positive comments about the unicycles and, especially, the custom paint job. A few bike riders had heard of Coker and asked what models we were riding. It was a truly great experience compounded by the uniqueness of being among the few unicyclists there.”
